Biography reports Soros began to express his views as a philanthropist in the 1970s when his backing of the purchase of copying equipment for resistance groups living under Communist rule in a number of Eastern European countries led to his forming of the Open Society Foundations. The principles of the foundation are loosely based on those from Popper’s book, “The Open Society and It’s Enemies”, which detail how any group that believes it has reached a state of political utopia has become a failing state and should not believe its ideology is above that of any other nation. The Open Society Foundations works to bring democracy, peach, and human rights to people around the world who are living under oppressive regimes or have their rights held in a perilous state.
